Breakfast kick-starts your metabolism, helping you burn calories throughout the day (this is a good start for sure ;)). It also gives you the energy you need to get things done and helps you focus on your daily tasks. And, trust me, those are just a few reasons why it is the most important meal of the day. (although might sound very cliché :p).
Besides, many studies have linked eating breakfast to good health, including better memory and concentration, lower levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol, and lower chances of getting diabetes, heart disease, and being overweight.
So, one thing is clear for sure - skipping the morning meal can throw off your body’s rhythm of fasting and eating. When you wake up, the blood sugar your body needs to make your muscles and brain work their best is usually low. And breakfast helps replenish it. If your body doesn’t get that fuel from food, you may feel zapped of energy, and you'll be more likely to overeat later in the day (which is not always a good thing :p).
Breakfast as your morning nutrients boost
Breakfast also gives you a chance to get in some vitamins and nutrients from healthy foods like: - Dairy
- Grains &
- Fruits.
So remember, if you do not eat it, you are not likely to get all of the nutrients your body needs.
Breakfast and your weight
Can a morning meal be good for your waistline? If you as me - Yes. Beside, researchers have found that on average, people who eat breakfast are thinner than those who don’t. That could be because eating foods with protein and fibre in the morning keeps your appetite in check the rest of the day. That is true for fact, trust me - based on my own experience ;). However, it does not guarantee you will fit into those skinny jeans. You have to make an extra effort and move your butt off your couch too ;).
Never skip your breakfast
If you’re dieting, don’t think cutting calories by skipping the meal will help (a big NO, no!!)
Simply pay attention to what, when, and how much you eat ( yes it is simple as that).
A crispy doughnut will not do (but you know that already ;)).
You do not need to eat a big meal for breakfast, but it is a good idea to have something small within an hour of waking up. Even last night’s leftovers zapped in the microwave will do (if nothing else is there straight away :)). However, resist that pastry or doughnut, though.
Your best morning breakfast bet
Your best bet is a mix of foods that include;
- Carbohydrates (will give you energy straight away).
- Protein (will take of your energy later on).
- Healthy fats &
- Fibers (keep you feeling full).
Also, you should try;
- A whole-grain cereal, low-fat milk or yogurt and fruit, or
- A home-made breakfast smoothie with fruit, and a teaspoon of bran.
- Nuts or whole-grain granola bars are also a good choice.
The latest are my favourite choices, so many fruit out there I love, beside mix of nuts and grains ...mmm nom nom.
Until next time, bon appétit, S.
