Microgreens benefits

With the busy and active lives we tend to live these days, making sure you are eating well and getting your essential doses of vitamins and nutrients can often be tricky. But, hey, not with the microgreens :) I know many people turn to dietary supplements, but these can be both expensive and often have questionable ingredient lists, yes! But microgreens offer a healthy and natural way to incorporate nutritious 'little veggies' into your diet, plus they are fun to grow and perfect for beginners. And trust me when I say - these nutrient packed greens should be a staple of your healthy diet ;)

1. Healthy benefits of microgreens

Microgreens are healthy because they are nutrient-dense, which means they are concentrated sources of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Compared to their adult counterparts, they contain up to 40x the vitamins and a broader spectrum of antioxidants too. Secondly, microgreens are suitable to eat raw which helps them retain their nutrients, as the high heat in cooking can destroy enzymes, vitamins, and phytonutrients (so, do never cook them or process with the heat - eat them fresh. Simply sprinkle them over the prepared food ;)). Always eat them fresh and eat them as soon as they have been harvested as the highest nutritional value is right then.

2. Microgreens are rich in nutritional value

Each microgreen variety had its own ensemble of health benefits, but generally speaking, microgreens are a great way to get your,

- Vitamins (Microgreens tend to be rich in vitamin C, vitamin E, and carotenoids (which aren’t vitamins themselves but are used by our body to make vitamin A).

- Minerals (The minerals microgreens tend to be the richest in are potassium, iron, zinc, magnesium, and copper).

- Antioxidants (Microgreens are rich in polyphenols and carotenoids and may help lower the type of stress that can prevent sugar from properly entering cells).

3. Microgreens will help your skin glow

Various microgreens have health benefits for your skin, especially sunflower, radish, broccoli, kale, and nasturtium microgreens, as they provide essential skin nutrients like zinc, vitamins A, B, D, E, sulforaphane antioxidants like polyphenols. Microgreens also have anti-inflammatory effects which can be credited to the antioxidants existing within these tiny but mighty plants. Good right ? :)

4. Healthy hair

Did you know that microgreens help damaged hair by reducing the chances of them breaking? Microgreens such as beetroot microgreens are particularly healthy for the hair as they are rich in iron, potassium, and electrolytes.

5. Microgreens help boost your immune system

If you feel the sniffles coming on, do yourself a favor and make a salad. Any vegetable has the potential to be anti-inflammatory and potentially affect immunity in a positive way ;) And microgreens pack a ton of these nutrients into an 'easy to eat package'.

6. Microgreens can help you reduce constipation

As part of an overall healthy diet, because microgreens are a good source of fibre, this might help speed things up in the bathroom too :D. Beside the high prebiotic fiber content in microgreens can also help nourish the friendly probiotic organisms in your gut. These prebiotic fibers stimulate the growth of intestinal bacteria associated with overall health and wellbeing.

7. Microgreens can help lower cholesterol level

Especially red cabbage microgreens as it can lower cholesterol and assist in weight loss when consuming an otherwise fatty diet. Just more proof that microgreens are a great addition to an already healthy diet. Simply cannot avoid right?

5. Now - grow your own microgreens!

Growing microgreens at home is both easy and incredibly rewarding. They are suitable for people of all experience levels, and can be grown at any time of the year as long as you do not let them get too cold ;) You will need a tray/container, a soil/substrate (or grow mat), some seeds, and a germination lid/cover that is helpful to assist with getting them started. I will make a short video in the near future and you sure can try it out yourself. And trust me when I say it is super easy :)

If I have not yet convinced you to start eating microgreens, they wait until you see mine. Will try to make a short video of how I grow them and you will tell ;)

Until next time, S.
